2Revolutions Just Got a B… and We’re Ecstatic!

When we started 2Revolutions 17 years ago, our goal was clear: to transform K-12 education in the U.S. by empowering states, districts, and educators to innovate.  Over the years, we’ve honed our focus on two interconnected revolutions: capacity building and systems change.   I am proud of the work we have, and continue to do, to transform K-12 education.  Recently, I wrote with a colleague about redefining the 2Revolutions, which articulates in more depth how these “revolutions” work together to bring about sustainable change.

From day one, we also aimed to be a profitable, values-driven social enterprise. Our mission and values have always been the lens through which we evaluate our decisions and direction. And we’ve been fortunate to build a business that succeeds on both financial and social impact fronts.

About a year ago, it was important to us to formalize 2Revolutions’ “double bottom line” status, balancing purpose and profit, because it has always been core to who we are.   While this belief has guided us since  the beginning  (see this piece that Todd wrote on our 10th anniversary in 2018), we decided that we were overdue in memorializing it.

In January 2024, edsUP, a new business focused on a new way to upskill educators, spun out from being incubated at 2Rev  as an autonomous Public Benefit Corporation (PBC).  At the same time, 2Revolutions began pursuing B-Corps certification.  A few weeks ago, we finished an intensive year-long review process, and we got a B… 2Revolutions is now officially a B Corps!

What is a B Corp?

B Corps are mission-driven companies that balance purpose and profit. It's a  global movement of organizations committed to using business as a force for good.  Learn more about the B Corps movement here.

So Why Did We Do It?

Even though many of our state, district and higher education partners think that we are non-profit, we did it because it is an important statement of values.  We thought that our belief system was important enough that we wanted to externally validate that purpose, as well as to memorialize that mission into the organization.  We want our Vision & Mission to be the drivers for the organization and how we make decisions.

2Rev Vision:

We envision a future education system where each learner engages in meaningful, personalized and relevant experiences that foster confidence in their future and empowers them to contribute meaningfully to their communities and society.

2Rev Mission:

Transform the Student Experience- Reshape classrooms to create learner-centered environments where each student thrives.

Empower Educators- Empower educators with co-designed professional learning that mirrors the learner-centered environments we envision for students, driving meaningful shifts in teaching and learning.

Align Systems Conditions- Partner with communities to calibrate policies, structures, and supports that sustain learner-centered approaches, fostering coherence and continuous improvement to sustain high-impact, learner-centered systems.

While we are not driven by profit, navigating the tension between mission and margin is an ongoing reality.  I don’t think we’re unique here.  However, we believe B Corp status adds another layer of accountability, ensuring that our mission and values, especially in moments of tough decision-making, have primacy.   While there are no tax or other regulatory benefits for this new status yet, we still believe, now more than ever, it is important to signal our authentic values to ourselves and the wider field.

Adam has spent over two decades catalyzing change through the design and launch of social enterprises across the education and community development sectors. He started 2Revolutions to feed this love, and to reinforce a belief that two critical levers we can pull are the birth and scaling of innovative ventures as a way to affect real change. At 2Rev, Adam is able to feed his love of both systems change and practice innovation.
